Per publicschoolreviews.com, "For the 2022-23 school year, there are 22 public schools serving 10,953 students in San Mateo-Foster City School District. This district's average testing ranking is 9/10, which is in the top 20% of public schools in California."

1. Where are the schools?

Below is a map of the two school districts for San Mateo in relation to the MLS (multiple listing services) and here is how to navigate it better:

  • Top right square in the banner ("View Larger Map") will expand you into a new Google Maps page and much easier to explore.

  • Top left with the arrow pointing right icon will open categories by which you can filter the map. The categories include public elementary, middle school, high schools, K-8 specific schools, and top rated private schools.

2. How to verify which school to go to?

San Mateo / Foster City School District (Elementary to Middle School)

San Mateo Union High School District (High School)

Private schools?

Here are links with review to the top rated in the map above.

3. How are our schools rated and ranked?

California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) is the California's statewide student assessment system, established on January 1, 2014. The primary purpose of the CAASPP System is to assist teachers, administrators, students, and parents by promoting high-quality teaching and learning through the use of a variety of assessment approaches and item types.

The CAASP website is great for understanding how individual schools or school districts compare against each other in the following categories.

From this information, websites like Greatschools.org, Publicschoolreview.com, USNews.com creates summaries to simplify your search while also trying to sell you things as you scroll. Haha.

What is the SMFCSD doing to address gaps found in the CAASP? Read this.

How does this compare to the #1 rated country in the world when it comes to education, Finland? Watch this video for the details but to summarize - Focus on getting the most educated (PhD and masters) as well as the most passionate teachers who are respected and trusted by parents enough that standardized test scores are not necessary. How to do that? In our opinion, it is done by paying teachers more and making a highly desirable atmosphere to work.

4. How are schools funded?

San Mateo County website summarized it best with this screenshot..

BONUS - Universal TK Expansion?

SB 130 expanded Transitional Kindergarten (TK) eligibility to all four-year-olds by the 2025-2026 school year.
